Quality Check: How Can You Tell

Updated: Oct 3

Once a cashmere product catches your fancy, there are some things to look out for. After all, you don’t want to get stuck with a low-quality product that won’t last the test of time. Here are a few tips to get the best deal.

1. Check the Label: If you haven’t already, start with the label. However, while 100% cashmere is an assurance of material, it isn’t always an assurance of quality.

2. Check the Feel: Hold it in your palms, softness is a good indicator of pure cashmere. But this can be subjective, and anyone not exposed to cashmere can be misled.

3. Light Test: Hold the fabric up to the light , if the fabric is see-through then the threads haven’t been tightly woven, making it less durable. Also look for irregularities. Since cashmere is normally woven by hand, it won’t have a perfectly symmetrical weave either.

4. Pilling test: Rub the fabric with your palm and pay careful attention to the threads. If they seem to roll up then you know that the fabric has a high content of short fibers, making it less durable.

5. Vibrancy: If colors are your preference, look for those that have the highest vibrancy. This is usually an indicator that the yarn started off extremely clean and the dyeing process was of the best quality.

6. The Two Plies Promise: When looking for warmth, check if the product has a minimum of two plies. This shows that more than one thread has been woven together to provide added warmth while also making the product stronger and more durable.

7. Burning: If you have the heart, take a small sample of your fabric (maybe a few threads if you’ve chosen a product with tassels) and burn it. If it smells like burning hair, you’ve got a genuine product on your hands.

8. Cost: If all else fails, cost is also a pretty decent indicator of quality. After all, better quality fabrics tend to be a lot more expensive than their cheaper knock-offs.
